Insights on Asia’s Business Trends.
The inaugural Focus Exchange is off to a good start, judging by the positive turnout for the networking platform. About 170 participants attended the forum and networking dinner event, which was jointly organised by Focus Marketing Technologies and 8MAD Group.
The forum, moderated by BFM presenter and producer Freda Liu, featured five speakers who gave presentations on Asia’s business megatrends. Before the speakers gave their presentations, Focus Malaysia CEO Hng Hung Yong gave a welcome speech.
Entrepreneur Loh Wei Hoong gave an introduction to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which is a development strategy launched by the Chinese government to promote economic cooperation among countries along proposed land and maritime routes. The routes can potentially connect 64 countries and more than four billion people. He pointed out China’s influence in the global economy and shared some of its history as a global superpower.
Next, Matrade deputy CEO Wan Latiff Wan Musa talked about the bilateral trade relations between China and Malaysia, as well as how the BRI will further strengthen those ties. He explained how Matrade supports SMEs with a variety of initiatives to help them prepare for new opportunities the BRI may bring.
Yang Dan Fui, who is head of property in China Railway Construction Corp Bhd, talked about the benefits of the greater connectivity between China and Malaysia under the BRI infrastructure projects. She also gave pointers on how entrepreneurs and SMEs can adapt and develop themselves to do business in the China market.
Private equity investment company 8I Holdings CEO and co-founder Ken Chee Kuan Tat emphasised on the importance of innovating to keep up and compete with expanding Chinese businesses in the region.
Eric Looi, sales and marketing director of SB Group, spoke about the pros and cons of the BRI, and what benefits it might bring to local companies in the long run.
After their presentations, the speakers were each given a plaque as a token of appreciation by Focus Malaysia. This was followed by a networking dinner to conclude the event.
